How the Paper is Produced - The Technology Behind USA TODAY

Without the technologies of communications satellites and high-resolution facsimile transmission, USA TODAY could not exist. The USA TODAY newspaper you picked up on the newsstand this morning traveled more than 44,600 miles through space at the speed of light before it arrived at the printing plant last night.

USA TODAY is completely edited and composed in McLean, Virginia. It is then transmitted, via satellite, five days a week, to the thirty-six printing plants serving major market clusters across the USA, and to four printing plants serving Europe and Asia.

The satellite signal that carries the domestic edition of USA TODAY is sent in one-eighth of a second to two GE Americom satellites, the GE4 and GE2, parked in stationary orbit 22,300 miles above the earth over the United States. Instantaneously, the signal is beamed back earthward, and another eighth of a second later is received simultaneously at the printing sites.

Electronic Editing

When USA TODAY launched in 1982, a computerized word processing system designed by Atex, Inc., of Bedford, Mass. was the heart of the USA TODAY production system. The editorial staff wrote and edited stories on video display terminals (VDTs). The stories would then go to phototypesetters to be set in photographic form (positive type on a paper film), which in turn was then pasted up into the various USA TODAY pages. The ATEX system was phased out in summer 1999.

The CCI NewsDesk Editorial and Pagination System replaced the Atex editorial front-end system. This introduced daily editorial pagination at USA TODAY. All editorial staff now work from PCs with e-mail and Internet capability. CCI NewsDesk allows the design editors in each section of the paper to layout and see a completed page on screen. Last minute changes can be made with the touch of a button instead of the cut and paste method.

Deadlines for news copy and for completed pages have been calculated to the minute to provide an even flow for facsimile transmission, and to give editorial the latest possible copy close.

Electronic Imaging

The Electronic Imaging department is responsible for processing digital ad material provided by USA TODAY customers. Advertising is received on disk or electronically via ISDN using Grand Central Pro ISDN Software, Wam!Net, or AP Adsend. All advertising is saved as EPS files and G4 TIFF files. EPS files are sent to the CCI pagination system for placement on editorial pages. G4 TIFF files are sent to Newsway, our Computer to Plate system, to be transmitted to the print sites.


In addition, Electronic Imaging makes adjustments and prepares editorial color and black & white images for the newspaper. Crosfield scanners are used to scan high quality prints or transparencies. Eskofot Flatbed scanners are used for copy dot scanning. This is needed when an advertiser sends hard copy material instead of a digital file.
Along with USA TODAY's domestic edition, Electronic Imaging produces USA TODAY's International edition, and USA TODAY Sports Weekly.

All workstations used for ad and scanning production are Macintosh based systems. Windows NT computers are used for plotting proofs. A Solaris UNIX server is used for the Advertising Archive.

Proofing is done on Hewlett Packard Design Jet large format proofers. These proofers along with specially designed See Color software, run a proofing farm which is made up of six proofers in McLean. Similar proofers are used at all print sites for ad output comparison.

Image Assembly

The Image Assembly department is responsible for the final approval of ads and editorial pages for all products and editions before they are transmitted to the print sites.

In CCI, the operators verify the material, placement and quality of all fractional national ads. In the Computer-to-Plate system all regional, copysplit and full-page ads are checked. In addition to ads, the Computer-to-plate operators check editorial pages before transmitting.

Image Assembly is in close contact with Editorial and Ad Operations to insure quality and continuous page-flow to meet nightly deadlines. All USA TODAY products are trafficked through Image Assembly.

Facsimile/Satellite

To maintain the print quality during transmission to the printing plants, USA TODAY has installed highly sophisticated Computer-to-Plate and satellite equipment.

Black and white pages are sent in one file transmission. Full color pages require four separate file transmissions, one each for magenta, cyan, yellow and black. A standard black and white newspaper page can be sent in about ten seconds. Each of the individual color transmissions takes from ten to thirty seconds, depending upon its halftone content.

As the page is being sent at the transmit site, the electronic signal carrying the page data is being sent to the GE4 and GE2 satellites which broadcasts the signal simultaneously to all the domestic USA TODAY printing plants. Each printing plant is equipped with a 5 meter (approximately 16 feet in diameter) and a 3.7 meter satellite receiving antenna. The signal is received by the antenna and passed over to the Computer-to-Plate equipment. The Computer-to-Plate equipment translate the electronic satellite signal into laser beam which plots a full-page plate. The full-page plates are then used directly on the offset printing press.

Computers are used extensively to monitor the entire process. The computers keep track of the time the pages were transmitted and determine which print sites, if any require re-transmission. If there are errors, a computer that is part of the broadcast control system automatically re-transmits data to the print sites, without any operator intervention.
Total transmission time for a 64 page newspaper with twenty full color pages spans from approximately 6:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. Press starts are scheduled for 11:40 p.m. and 1:40a.m. (Eastern Time) for the two domestic editions of the newspaper.

The European and Asian editions are edited in McLean and transmitted via satellite Sunday through Thursday between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). Editions are printed in Frankfurt, Charleroi, London and Hong Kong for distribution throughout the European continent, Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The London site primarily serves the British Isles.

Printing

All the sophisticated Computer-to-Plate and satellite equipment in the world cannot guarantee quality unless the printing itself is of high quality. One of the real successes of USA TODAY has been in its reproduction of full color magazine-type advertising, editorial photos and graphics.

The printing presses at all USA TODAY print sites have been fine-tuned to the original equipment manufacturers specifications. Recently installed Hewlett-Packard printers running SeeColor Corp.'s Computer To Proof Software output proofs of all color files transmitted to the print site. These proofs are used as a color comparison tool for the print sites, which ensures a direct match between the advertisers' original material and the printed ads.

Densitometers are used at each print site to maintain the best visual reproduction throughout the press run. Seminars have been conducted in conjunction with the Rochester Institute of Technology, System Brunner, and others to train production personnel in color theory and offset printing techniques. Checklists are used to get the presses ready for printing each night. Consistency is aided by following Standard Operating Procedures at each site. Finally, the printing quality of each site is evaluated daily for all ads and editorial color.

The technology employed by USA TODAY is both extensive and sophisticated. Without communications satellites and image file transmissions, The Nation's Newspaper never would have gotten off the drawing board and onto the streets of America. The entire USA TODAY production system, from pre-press, through Computer-to-Plate and satellite network, to the actual printing plant, was designed with quality as the key goal.

ANIMAL PLANET INTERNATIONAL LAUNCHES SLATE
Programming to Celebrate the Natural World

Crime Scene Wild is a fascinating new series that uncovers the illegal wildlife trade, which is second only to drugs in terms of volume and revenue generated. The series follows former special investigative agent Steve Galster as he uses cutting-edge forensic and DNA technology to track wildlife smugglers and catch them in the act, providing viewers with a behind-the-scenes look into this world. Going Ape is a continuing half-hour series that highlights conservation in action by profiling ongoing efforts to protect primates against loggers and bush meat traders in West Africa. Filmed at the Cameroon Wildlife Aid sanctuary in Cameroon, the series documents the efforts of Rachel Hogan and her dedicated team of veterinarians and volunteers as they work to save and rehabilitate endangered chimpanzees and gorillas in the rainforest. Most people and consumers believe this sector to be a retail endeavor, yet that is not really so. In fact the biggest income generator is the catalog and Internet sales to Corporations and it is know that businesses which have 20 or more employees spend $200 per year in office supplies. Are you shocked by that high number; well you should not be if you are in a small business for yourself and post all your office supplies receipts into Quick Books and fill out your Schedule C tax return. So now the Staples Corporate Sales Forces are going ballistic with Corporate clients changing companies for office supplies. Moral of the story; Outsourcing does not always make sense. Consider this in 2006.

When the average woman in America is 5'4", why are all the cool jeans made for 6' fashion models? And, how many women do you know with a 34" inseam? It's difficult being short in the world of fashion jeans today! Here are a few suggestions to help you out.

To lengthen your line use a vertical fade or a crease down the center of the pant leg. Or, get a clean dark wash. A uniform color from waist to hem will make your legs look longer and make you look slimmer. And please, avoid those super low rises. A mid rise with a slight upward tilt at the back waist is another great leg lengthening trick. Always keep it slim and stay away from wide leg and trouser styles with heavy hem details. They will make you look shorter and wider than you really are.

There are great skinny styles available now, in fact you may have seen them in the fashion magazines, and they are often shorter in length. If they're still too long, scrunch them up around the ankle - it's the chic way to wear them, and they'll stay there because they are so skinny. Straight leg styles are back, and they look great cuffed. Just be sure that your cuff is not too wide. Pair them with heels or a nice pointy toed flat that will visually lengthen your leg. Also, straight legs are easy to hem because there is no flare to deal with. Or you can wear them longer, just slightly above the ground with your high heels on, and it will maximize your leg length.

If none of these tips seem to work for you, or that pair you love only comes in a long length, then pay to get your jeans shortened! It will cost about $10- $15 bucks extra to get a great jean. Choose a flare leg style to start, and once you shorten it 2-3" you'll be left with a great looking boot cut jean.

Survey: Workers set to shop on the job

In terms of shopping online on Cyber Monday, many workers can barely contain themselves.

Close to half of American workers are expected to shop while at work on the Monday after Thanksgiving - the online retailing world's version of Black Friday - according to a new survey by
Decision Analyst conducted on behalf of BJ's Wholesale Club, the company said this week.

The study from Natick, Mass.-based BJ's Wholesale (NYSE: BJ) surveyed over 500 working people across the country.

Although more than 11 percent said they had been caught shopping by their boss while on the job, the survey showed that the temptation to find a great bargain is so strong, they would spend nearly an hour on average shopping online this Monday instead of working.

As on Black Friday, many e-retailers offer some of the most exceptional deals of the year on Cyber Monday.

However the desire to find bargains online lasts far beyond Cyber Monday. The BJ's survey showed that about 50 percent of those surveyed said they do all of their online shopping at work, while 13 percent said they have shopped online during a conference call.

The more research that is done on the pair of shoes, the pricier it will be. For example, if the amount of money spent on researching a pair of durable and comfy shoes is high, most probably, the price of that pair of shoes is high too.
